Out Scouting with Little Kenny!!!!!!!!!
Well 2010 deer archery season is just around the coner on Sept 25th. The mineral licks are getting hit hard. Haven't seen as many this preseason as last but haven't been getting out as early either. Little Kenny and I stomped through the thick vegitation of the bottoms. Lots of frogs down there to thick to see anything till you get to the stand areas. The deer have a well beaten path between the corn and the meadow up top. It is a deer highway and they are hitting the mineral block hard there. The trail is about a 20 yard shoot according to the range finder. Looks like the old stand in the meadow has a very well developed mineral pool that the deer continue to go to. I think that we are in for a big season this year. Drop tine is still out there some where and may even have develped a double for us this year one can only hope. I look forward to sharing some good experiences with Ryan again this year. Maybe soon Bryant and Tyson will realize that real men hunt in the Mid-West. And that the Western states are for Yuppies that wish they were real manly hunters. Kill'em all!!!!!!!!!!!

Montana's Big Sky Country
I know everyone is getting pumped about hunting season being just around the corner and enjoying some summer fishing. Well, it's the same with me, except I am now living in the most beautiful place in the US, Montana. I know, I know, I've already told you all about it on the phone, but I wanted to post some pictures of my man time over the past couple months to show you. My dad helped me move across country and after we arrived, we had to take a little break from unpacking to do a little trout fishing in the Beartooth mountains which are only 45 minutes from my house! We saw tons of wildlife and caught Rainbow and Brown trout on little floating Rapalas in the West Branch of Rosebud and Stillwater Rivers.
We saw probably 30 elk that first night we were up the canyon and 50+ deer (both whitetail and mule deer). I brought my new .357 along for bear and we had a chance to do a little shooting. The West Rosebud River we were fishing on was pretty small so we were locating all the pools where the water would slow down enough to pull a lure through it. We would almost always catch a trout on the first or second cast in each hole and then we would move on to the next hole. The river was in a pretty steep canyon and was enclosed on all sides by pine trees. I kept having the feeling a grizzly was going to jump me.
We also saw a prairie chicken and a family of foxes. It was pretty cool.
After a long day of fishing, shooting, and trophy buck spotting, we stopped at a local place called the Grizzly Bar that was out in the middle of nowhere up in the mountains. It had been recommended to us by the guy in the fly shop at Cabela's back in Billings. It was by far the best prime rib I have ever had. The inside of the place was decorated like an old hunting cabin too.
After settling down in Montana for a couple of weeks I met my dad and brothers in Malad, Idaho for a cattle drive. We were only on horses for a couple of days and then fished and rode atv's the other days. It was a blast! You can tell by the pics that I was born to ride a buccin' bronco. Giddy up!
This was my dad's fifth cattle drive and I'm sure it won't be my last. One of the days the cowboys roped the calves while we would jump on them and hold them down. Then the cowboys won't jump off their horses, brand the calves and cut their balls off. All in a hard days work. After driving cattle one afternoon, we came back to the cabin and saw this red tailed hawk baby perched on a low branch. Since it could not fly yet, we scared it out of the tree and captured it. One of the neighbors trains them to hunt and he came by and picked it up. On our last day there, we took the atv's all the way up on top of the mountain on a 6 hour ride. I definitely will have to pick up one of those things.
The rest of the pictures are from little trips around my house here in billings. The pheasant picture is from my backyard, the antelope is from 2 miles behind my house up on some bluffs, and the buffalo was from the Beartooth mountains.
As you can tell, I have been able to keep myself plenty busy since moving out here on top of a new job, moving in, and getting situated. I am hoping and planning on having all of you come out here with me to join in some mountain man hillbilly fun.
